 Into you I

(DerBund, Mrianne Muhlemann, 13th June 2009)

The Taiwanese dancer: Hui-Chen Tsai already proved her choreographic skills at last year” Tanz-Made in Bern “performance. This time, she sketches society clichés in “Lost in the motions” to music by Michael Nyman. The themes of mobbing at the workplace, power struggle & both are shown by strong images. “Lost in the motions” showed the annoy scenery within a hard working society that remains silent.
Her second piece “Into you I”, she shows the individualisation process of two women. He convinces with strong Musicality & Poetry. (DerBund, Marianne Muhlemann, 13th June 2009)

                                                  (Tanzkritil, 27 June 2009)

Last year, Hui-Chen Tsai showed two pieces of choreography. Again, like last year, surprisingly steadily both are very different. The diversity of her work seems never ending. It is obvious that she takes on the stylistic devices of guest choreographer, in fact she openly admits to” Yes, when a new choreographer arrives, I sock up his methods like a sponge”.

This time, she took on a concrete topic: sexual harassment at the work place. The daily routine-waking up, getting ready –is set to an almost calculated rhythm. Due to merciless haste, all movements are exaggerated and the briefcase becomes a hazard.
The mechanic routine- grey in grey- is a welcome unemotional contrast to the intimacy of the office, which is lit in red. This is where the inner line in a human is crossed by the authority and superiors requires. A lonely solo depicts the windblown otherworldly aftermath of the situation.
The use of pulling, ripping movements to symbolize the desire to rid oneself of the inner stain works well. Requiring eccentricity and challenging the dancer Martina Langman.

Mature Choreography with potential for a full evening work presented by Hui-Chen Tsai. Both choreographies “Into you I” and ‘Lost in the motions” are very expressive, show intensive images and are carried by a subtle emotions density. Into you I” emotions, relationships& their shadows are breaking out of the frame to fight with & against each other. In the second piece “Lost in the motions” deals with aggression, power bottles, group dynamic in our recent business world and an intense example of sexual harassment in the work place.
